Duo Octavian

Duo Octavian return to Pontiac Enchanté with a program that features a staple of the two piano repertoire - Rachmaninov's evocative First Suite for Two Pianos, based on a set of romantic Russian poems - juxtaposed against three works that are a signature of Duo Octavian's programming style.  In his 2022 arrangement of Rameau's Pygmalion Overture, Suren captures the grandeur and energy of Rameau's orchestral writing with two pianos.  His arrangement is in some ways inspired by Harold Bauer's masterful arrangement of Bach's Italian Concerto.  Most arrangements for two pianos are by nature 'reductive': the arranger is trying to fit something requiring many performers into something manageable by just two.  In this case, Bauer is expanding a piece originally written for one performer into a much larger texture.  The Italian Concerto is one of Bach's most enduringly popular keyboard works: while many members of the audience may be familiar with the piece, it is a guarantee that this arrangement of it will surprise you! Kelly-Marie Murphy's Dr. Blue's Rapidly Deployable Escape Ladder was commissioned by Duo Octavian as part of their Community Commission Project for a performance at Ottawa Chamberfest in the summer of 2022.  The piece is based on a painting by Joan Miró called The Escape Ladder.  The piece is energetic, driving, and urgent: not unlike escaping from a bad situation in a hurry.  At the end, the listener is left to decide whether the escape was successful - or not.
