In this concert curated by Wakefield-based National Arts Centre Orchestra cellist Julia MacLaine, the cello is cast in three different lights: as a solo instrument, with ancient and earthy percussion, and alongside the piano’s compelling lushness. Julia will explore how the cello changes roles in each of these settings in a program that features well-loved music by Bach and Debussy, a little-known cello sonata from the 19th century by the English composer Ethel Smyth, recently composed music by Northwest Territories based composer Carmen Braden, and an original composition by Julia herself.
